• Kathmandu Durbar Square is the former royal plaza with the Hanuman Dhoka palace, Malla-era temples and the house of the living goddess Kumari — a UNESCO site.
• Swayambhunath (the «Monkey Temple») is an ancient stupa on a hill above the city, painted with the eyes of the Buddha and surrounded by macaques and prayer wheels.
• Boudhanath is one of Asia's largest stupas and the heart of Nepal's Tibetan Buddhist community, ringed by monasteries and cafés.
• Pashupatinath is Nepal's most important Hindu shrine on the banks of the Bagmati River, where cremations are performed and evening aarti rituals take place.

• The National Museum of Nepal in Chhauni gathers weapons, miniatures and royal-era artefacts in the Swayambhunath area.
• The Patan Museum in the neighbouring city of Patan holds one of the finest Newar-art collections, housed in restored 16th–17th-century palaces.
• Narayanhiti Palace Museum is the residence of Nepal's last king, turned into a museum after the country became a republic in 2008.
