Costa Rica is a small Central American country between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, known for its peaceful character, the absence of a standing army (abolished in 1948) and the «Pura Vida» philosophy. About a quarter of its territory is protected as national parks and reserves, and the Arenal, Poás and Irazú volcanoes share the map with rainforests and the beaches of Guanacaste and Nicoya.
