Taiwan is an island state in East Asia off the coast of mainland China, separated by the Taiwan Strait. - Taipei 101 (508 m) is the symbol of the city, with an observation deck and the world's largest tuned mass damper — a 660-tonne pendulum visible inside the tower.
- Longshan Temple is Taipei's oldest and most revered temple (founded in 1738), where Buddhist, Taoist and folk deities are worshipped side by side.
- Shilin Night Market is the capital's largest, famous for fried chicken, oyster omelettes and the lively atmosphere of its food-stall alleys.
- Yangmingshan National Park rises straight above the city — sulphur fumaroles, hot springs and spring blossom of cherry trees and azaleas.

- The National Palace Museum holds one of the world's finest collections of Chinese art, brought from the Forbidden City in 1949.
- Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) is Taiwan's leading centre for contemporary art, located in the Yuanshan district.
- Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is a monumental complex with a museum devoted to the ROC leader and the popular Liberty Square in front of it.
